The source of the river Bhagirathi, Gaumukh ("The mouth of a cow") is the cave in the glacier, from which the river emerges in full vigor. Though Gaumukh is considered the source of the river Ganga, it's other tributary Alaknanda contributes more to its water. Gaukukh Glacier, Which is the lifeline of Northern India, is receding at the rate of 120 feet a year dut to global warming. Ganges Rive, one of the great rivers India, rising on the S. slope of the Himalaya mountains, and flowing southerly and easterly into the northern portion of the bay of Bengal. The river Bhagirathi, usually regarded as its true source, has its origin in the territory of Gurhwal, 18 km from the temple of Gungootree, a favorite resort of Hindu pilgrims. DAY 01 : ARRIVAL DELHI :
Upon arrival meet to our representative, drive to hotel, for overnight.
DAY 02: DELHI-HARIDWAR-RISHIKESH (TRAIN)
Early in the morning transfer to New Delhi railway station, board train to Haridwar, upon arrival ETA 1120 hrs, meet to our local staff, follow half day local sightseeing of Haridwar city, visit Temples, Ghat and Ashrams. Late evening witness the Ganga ceremony at Har ki Pauri. Drive 01 hrs further to Rishikesh, check in hotel. Overnight at hotel.
DAY 03: RISHIKESH-UTTARKASHI 1158M (5-6 HRS DRIVE) :
Morning after breakfast drive to Uttarkashi via Tehari Daam, follow a beautiful ridge road through Devdar and Dhanolti groves, and then along the banks of the Bhagirathi River to the holy town of Uttarkashi. After Chamba you have a chace see the huge lake, before there was a district head quater of Old Tehari, now the city is under the water.... Uttarkashi is a famous destination for pilgrims going to Gangotri and an important center for yogis and sadhus. Check into hotel or guesthouse.
DAY 04: UTTARKASHI-GANGOTRI (3084m) 3-4 HRS DRIVE :
Morning drive to Gangotri, en route explore some tinny villages and small hemlet.
Gangotri lies in the northwest Himalayas of Garhwal, and is one of the four Holy Dhams (pilgrim sites) of the North. The Ganga is believed to have first descended to earth at Gangotri (Ganga + Uttari, which means descended). The Bhaironghati bridge; said to be the highest in Asia, is built across one of the deepest gorges in the world, and connects Gangotri to the rest of the world over the Jahnavi River. On arrival check in hotel or guest house, We will make a visit to Swami Sundaranand's orchard and kutti. Swamiji is renowned for his photographs, Himalayan expeditions and contributions towards the preservation of the Mighty Himalayas. It is a true honor and privilege to have darshan with one of India's great Sadhus. The rest of the day will be spent acclimatizing, visiting temple and surrounding sights. An optional Ganga Puja (offering) can be done on the banks of the River. There is an 18th century temple made of granite rock at Gangotri that was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander, and later rebuilt by the Maharaja of Jaipur. The temple here is dedicated to the Goddess Ganga. Overnight in rest house
DAY 05: GANGOTRI - BHOJBASA (3550M) 14 KM TREK:
Early in the moring commece trek to Bhojbasa, though there are trees, we are walking on the side of the mountain and there is little shade most of the time. We will camp near Bhojbas guest house and if possible we will meet the baba who lives there. Overnight stay in tents.
DAY 06: BHOJBASA - GAUMUKH (3890M)-TAPOVAN (4450M)-BHOJBASA 5-6 HRS TREK:
Morning after early breakfast we commence our trekt o the source of the River Ganga, a beautiful walk with views of Mt. Shivling and the Bhagirathi peaks. We will cross through a small landslide prone area just approaching Bhojbasa, where we will want to walk briskly!
trek up and across the Gangotri Glacier climbing over boulders, with a final ascent over rock and scree, up a 300m vertical wall. Tapovan is a vast meadow of golden grass and is surrounded by peaks. Mt. Shivling (6543m) flanked by Mt. Meru (6630m) and Kedar Dome (6808m), Sudarshan (6,507m) and Bhagirathi I (6,856m), II (6,512m) and III (6,454m) are some of the peaks that can be seen from here. This is truly one of the most breathtaking views imaginable. Later descent trek to Bhojbasa. Overnight stay in tents
DAY 07: BHOJBASA-GANGOTRI - UTTARKASHI :
After breakfast commence descent trek to Gangotri, 5-6 hrs, take our vehicle drive to Uttarkashi, by the same way. On arrival check in guest house or hotel.
DAY 08: UTTARKASHI - HARIDWAR (6-7 HRS DRIVE) :
Early in the morning drive through the Shivalik range of mountain, On arrival at Haridwar, board train to Delhi by Dehradun Shtabadi Express. ETD 1845 hrs. ETD 2210 hrs. at New Delhi railway station meet to our rep. trasfer to your hotel or further destination. End the services. |
